Bhaktapur City - UNESCO Heritage Site

Bhaktapur City is an ancient city east of Kathmandu. It was not part of our itinerary. On the way to Nagakot from Kathmandu, we discovered this gem along our route and fortunately we had a day free on the last day of our trip to visit it. We hired a taxi outside our hotel and the driver gladly took us there as well as to Swayambu and waited for us as we went sightseeing. Without a guide, we had to bear with the disadvantage of not having what we see explained to us and so apart from the general knowledge that this was an ancient city that went back to the 12th Century. The historical details could be obtained from the link above. The great earthquake in 1934 destroyed parts of this city and restoration took place over the years that followed with foreign help. We spent about 2 hours in Bhaktapur walking around, admiring the stone sculptures and wood carvings that came from centuries ago. We gazed at the towering layered roofs of the temples and wandered around on our own. Bhaktapur city consists of a few Durbar Squares that we could not cover entirely. What we saw and took time to appreciate are captured in these photos here:
